Question:
Temporary Crowns: I went in and had a root canal done on one of my teeth and a temporary crown placed on the tooth. At the same time, I was fitted for the permanent crown and told to come in within the next 6-8 weeks to have the permanent crown placed.

I did not return to the dentist's office until 7 1/2 months later to get the permanent crown placed becasue it took me a while to pay for the crown and they wouldn't place it until it was paid. I also was not told that if you waited too long it wouldn't fit.

When I returned they said that the permanent crown did not fit and that was because my teeth had shifted. They worked on the permanent crown and used it to make a new temporary and took impressions of the tooth again to make a new permanent crown.

To add to my frustration, a week after this temporary was placed,it came out and I bit down on it and broke the tooth below it off. I have been billed for another half crown because the dentist office flat out said that the only reason the permanent crown did not fit was because I waited too long to come in and that there was zero chance that the crown was made wrong by the lab.

I asked if I could have a discussion with the dentist but he never returned my phone calls. I am planning to change dental offices and have asked for them to forward my x-rays to another office but they refuse to do that until I pay for the other half of the crown.

What should I do? Is it true that if you wait too long the permanent crown most likely will not fit and that the lab can't possibly make any mistakes? ...Visitor from MI

Answer:
I am sorry to hear about your dental problems. Certainly our world is not perfect and all our interactions do not go the way we expect based on our own realities.

Not all laboratory crowns always fit however unfortunately your finances are the real culprit.

Seven and one half months of wearing a temporary is seven months too long and tooth migration is the consequence. I am not surprised that your tooth moved and the original crown no longer fit.

I am also sorry to hear that you broke a tooth after your temporary came out. There is just so much dentists can control and the remember is up to chance and God. I suggest you pick a new dental office and have them request your x-rays.

Prior to this act, I suggest that you write a nice letter to the dentist, explain your frustrations and kindly request that he just forward your x-rays directly to the specific dental office that will be contacting them and then we (you and the office) can just move on. Good luck!
