Question:
Crown Cement Failure: I had a crown put on a back tooth about 18 months ago by one dentist and have changed dentists in the meantime.

The new dentist says the cement is gone only on the outside of the tooth closest to cheek. He wants to pry the crown up or off and re-cement it. Is this safe or a common thing to happen? ...Visitor from VA

Answer:
I regret I do not have a good and specific answer for you. I do not know how I could determine if only part of a crown had cement under it or not.

Additionally, I do not know that I could always pry a crown off without damaging the tooth or the crown. I would have to have compelling reasons before I started such an undertaking. This does not make me right, rather my opinion.

My suggestion is to return to the original dentist and have him or her evaluate your new information, make a diagnosis and if necessary "stand behind" the workmanship. Good luck!
