Question:
Unhappy with New Crowns: I recently had two crowns placed that I am not happy with aesthetically because they are not anatomically like the rest of my teeth.

I tried to express my dislikes before they were seated but my dentist said no one will know but me and that your teeth are different from side to side of your mouth.

I am already thinking of when I can have them redone to my liking. Is there anything I can do -- should this dentist redo them for me since I am not happy with the product I paid for? ...Visitor from KS

Answer:
Without seeing your specific mouth it is difficult to comment on your needs. Certainly none of our bodies are symmetrical and this goes for the teeth as well.

I regret your dislike and wished you had insisted prior to cementation.

There are some things we can modify without causing other problems with the bite and the gums and somethings we as dentists are stuck having to do that are compromises based on the above.

In my practice, it is my policy that if a patient does not like something we re-do it until they are satisfied. So yes, perhaps the dentist should be asked to re-do it to your specific requirements as long as they do not violate basic and sound biologic principles.

Having said that, if the crowns match reasonably well and they are well adapted to the margins of the tooth then these considerations are worthy of thought before the new crowns are destroyed and you start all over agin. Good luck with your choices.
