Question:
Dental Crown Replacement: I went to the dentist for a dental cleaning and was told that the crown that was put on 6 months ago needed to be replaced with a new one.

What are the possible causes for this? Is it a mistake from the dental lab or with the way it was put on? I am getting a new one in 2 weeks - what can I do to make sure it doesn't happen again this time? Also, is it unusual that this occurred? ...Visitor from MD

Answer:
The most likely reason your dentist has suggested redoing the crown you had done just 6 months ago, is he/she found an open margin during your exam and or in an x-ray taken during your cleaning visit.

An open left untreated would lead to recurrent decay under the crown. Open margins result for many reasons. It could happen as a result of the impression or at the lab and yes even at the seating of the crown.

They are most often inter proximal (in between the teeth) where it can not be seen. This can happen to the best dentist and labs. If this dentist is the same dentist that did the crown 6 months ago, you should feel comfortable knowing that he/she found this problem and shared it with you. I am sure your dentist does not want this to happen again either.
