Crowns Ask The Dentist Richard Winter Question:
Porcelain Crown - Blue at bottom and gum line A couple of months ago I had a porcelain crown put in on the bottom front tooth.

After the installation, I immediately noticed my tooth looked blue at the bottom. I went back to my Dentist to have it cleaned and he said there was no need...the blue streak is the matching up part to my tooth. He acted as if this was totally natural.

I don't have any other blue teeth and this bothers me. Is it normal for a crown to have a blue bottom at the gum line? ...Visitor from SC

Answer:
It certainly can be hard to diagnose your problem from your description as alot of things can cause the blue hue you are concerned about.

I will name a few:
  1. You could have a porcelain fused to metal crown and the metal could be showing through the gum causing a bluish tint to your gumline around the crown. If this is the case and it is unsightly the crown will need to be replaced with an all ceramic crown to brighten the tissue.

  2. You could have a gum problem from the temporary crown or final crown impinging on the bone. Crowns can't be buried too close to the bone or an unhealthy tissue response can result. This can be seen as a bluish, puffy gum around a crown, with alot of bleeding on brushing and or flossing. This usually requires some gum surgery or a new crown to correct or both.

  3. Lastly the bluish color could be from a discolored root, a result of trauma, root canal therapy or tetracycline stain, that needs to be properly opaqued out before an all porcelain crown can be installed.
Now you know as much as alot of dentists! The only way to proceed is approach your dentist with these questions or go in for a consult.
