Crowns Ask The Dentist Mitchell Pohl Question:
Cosmetic Dentistry Crowns for Children: Both of my children, ages 3 and 6, have cavities. My six year old has been set on a plan to extract 3 teeth and get a silver crown on another.

Is there an alternative? I would like for my daughter to get all porcelain crowns, is that an option? Then my 3 year old has had her 4 front teeth bonded, and 2 of them are starting to decay. What do I do? I do not want her front teeth extracted. Can these teeth be redone?

Is there any cosmetic dentistry available for any of these problems?? ...Visitor from FL

Answer:
There are a number of factors to be considered. You must first ask yourself if you are prepared to go through the expense and secondly do you want to subject your children to treatment that some would deem unnecessary.

I tell most parents in situations in which children prematurely lose their front teeth not to worry. Why? Children don't miss their front teeth. They see children with missing teeth all the time and it just seems natural.

Parents tend to impose their own feelings of vanity upon their children. Your children will be getting their permanent front teeth at age 7 to 8. I would do nothing. As far as placing a porcelain crown on a baby tooth, I am sure it can be done. Are you willing to pay over $800 for a porcelain crown for a baby tooth?

Whether your three year olds teeth can be saved is difficult to answer without a clinical evaluation. The other consideration is can your 3 year old sit through a longer more technue sensitive procedure? Will she need to be sedated? Do you want to subject your child to these procedures?

Finally, are finances a problem? If not, I am certain other options can be explored. I hope this has helped and given you some information to consider.
