Question:
Tingling Gum Pain with New Crown: I had my tooth prepped for a crown. I wore the temporary for a few weeks with no problem.

Now that the permanent crown is in place, I can't hit the roof of my mouth with food or my tongue. The sensation is that of aluminum foil on a metal filling. There seems to be slight swelling in this area. ...Visitor from IL

Answer:
You are experiencing galvanic reaction. Basically you have a "battery" in your mouth.

The crown contains non-precious metal and the acid normally present in your saliva results in the sensation that you described. The swelling is most likely caused by an allergic reaction to the nickel in the crown.

Have the crown removed and reprovisionalized. If the symptoms are relieved an all porcelain or precious metal crown is indicated. If the tooth had an amalgam (mercury/silver) filling, make sure that it was removed entirely prior to the preparation of the tooth for a crown.
