Question:
Captek Crown Gray Line: I recently had a Captek crown inserted over one of my front teeth. I chose Captek to avoid having any gray or black lines show up over time.

It has been two weeks since the insertion and I still have a gray line at the gumline. My dentist said my gums would come down to cover the gray line.

Also, I realized that my dentist seems to have exposed some of the metal in the back of the tooth while adjusting the crown to suit my bite. ...Visitor from NJ

Answer:
The gums will not come down to cover the grey line.

Captek crowns use a thin gold foil placed over the model of the tooth. The porcelain is layered over this gold foil. The gold foil is not translucent. Light will never pass through it. The line that you see is a shadow were the light can not penetrate.

Although traditional porcelain to gold crowns may show some metal, Captek crowns can not show any metal. The foil is thinner than aluminum foil and will quickly wear out. This will expose your tooth and result in additional problems.

The crown needs to be remade. In order to obtain an esthetic result, an all porcelain crown should be used and bonded into place.
