Question:
Normal Crown Characteristics: What is the difference between the margins and contour of a crown?

Also, should a crown act as the original tooth? For example, if there was no food impaction below gum level with the original tooth, and there is with the crown, what went wrong? ...Visitor from NJ

Answer:
Yes a crown should simulate nature and replicate a natural tooth as closely as possible.

The contours (the shape and size of the crown) and the margins (where the crown material meets the natural remaining tooth usually near the gumline) should be a close to the shape of the original and adjacent teeth as possible.

These proper contours and also contacts between teeth should help to deflect food away from the gumline. The contacts between teeth not only should have some resistance to floss ("snap" as your natural teeth) but also be contoured so as to be broad enough so food does not impact.

If the crown is improperly shaped so that the area can not remain or become healthy, then it should be redone.
