Crowns Ask The Dentist Richard Winter

Question:
Resurfacing Crowns with New Porcelain:: I have eleven crowns that were done several years ago but are still fine. I would like to have my other teeth whitened.

Is it possible to remove crowns and resurface them with whiter porcelain? ...Visitor from TX

Answer:
Interesting question but the answer is no.

Tapping off crowns is risky, can cause fracture of the underlying tooth and isn't worth the risk.

A slightly less risky procedure is called the Hollywood Crown. This involves shaving off the porcelain and rebonding a porcelain veneer onto the old porcelain. It is expensive and may delaminate or come off and can't be guaranteed.

Your best be is to redo the crowns. Crowns get old and need replacing eventually anyway so redoing them to match white teeth is certainly an option for a person who wants a cosmetic makeover.
