FAQ:  Crowns or Veneers?

Crowns versus Veneers Ask The Dentist Mitchell Pohl

Question:
I have had my four front teeth veneered but in the process my dentist drilled at least half of my real tooth away.

As a result my real teeth look like the letter V behind the veneers. Two of these veneers have broken already, and I'm wondering whether it is because there is so little tooth to attach the veneers on to.

Would I bet better getting a crown if the veneers keep breaking? ...Visitor from Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada

Answer:
I am sorry to hear that you are having such problems. It is hard for me to make a judgement regrding how much tooth structure was removed.

However, the more tooth structure present, the stronger the bonding of the veneer to the tooth. Yet one must consider the bonding procedure itself which is very technique sensitive.

If the veneer was breaking off the tooth rather than just fracturing, I would be suspect of the bonding procedure. I would not do crowns without first consulting with another dentist. Hope this has helped.
