Question:
Decalcification caused by Braces: After braces, 4 areas of decalcification eroded on my lower teeth.
It has been 15 years now of using fluoride gel, dental flossing and rinsing after each meal. Six years ago I woke up and noticed an area of missing enamel on an upper tooth. I stopped drinking soda, juice, or eating candy, and added xylitol.
My teeth are still eroding. I use fluoride gel nightly, wear a retainer (that I wash nightly) and get more frequent dental cleanings. The erosion is happening along the line where my retainer metal hits.
Are the 6-month dental cleanings too harsh? Is the fluoride a scam? Or is my 15-year retainer wear either blocking the benefits of remineralizing saliva or promoting bacterial growth in my mouth? ... Visitor from CA

You are asking some wonderful questions and there are circumstances to each.
Fluoride is not a scam but just because you are using it, doesn't garantee success. It is very possible that you would be far worse without the fluoride.
The message that I am getting from you is that you care and you are doing something about it. Yet, the level of dental health you desire has not been achieved. Have you discussed this with your dentist?
Six month dental cleanings are not harsh. However, depending on how the cleanings have been done can have an effect. After practicing for 29 years I have patients that have been getting cleaned every three months for many many years and they are doing very well. I have not found that cleanings do damage.
I do share in your concern that something may be wrong and that some changes are in order.
Is your tooth brush too harsh? Is your brushing technique at home causing these problems? Do you use an electric brush? When do your brush your teeth? I have found that brushing, flossing, water pik and then flouride before bed is the best time. A water pik, used correctly could make a big difference. How are you adminstering the fluoride, are you using custom trays or just brushing?
It is all in the details.
