FAQ:  Dentistry Answers for Dentists

Topic: Implant Placement
Question:
I am beginning to place implants; do you have or know of a solution to avoid penetrating too deep when drilling?

Something like a simple guiding device which would stop the drill at a desired length, usable with any manufacturer's drill bit. ...Dentist from Paris France

Answer:
The easiest and safest way is to make a hard clear acrylic Stent. This will allow you to position the drill bit in all three dimensions for the perfect placement of the Implant.

Start with a model of the mouth, next, wax in the desired final prosthesis shape. With this new model a clear stent can be made similar to a hard biteplate. The acrylic needs to cover the occlusal surfaces of the remaining teeth and lock into place.

Diagnostic tests can be performed with this stent such as a CT scan. At the time of surgery modify the stent to allow the hand piece and drill size to accurately create the access for the implant placement.
