Dentures Ask The Dentist Richard Winter Question:
Denture Breakage: I am 45 and have a full upper denture, my lower teeth are natural.

I have gone through 4 dentures in about 4 years. I am cracking the base plate, and was told I have a very strong natural bite.

I now have a metal plate in the palate area as well as wire mesh embedded in the area surrounding the frenum. I have been to 3 different dentists the last being a dental lab. I do sleep in them but when I received the 3rd one I tested the theory of grinding in my sleep by not sleeping in them.

They lasted one week before a crack emerged. I have had the cracks repaired and a new one appears somewhere else. .... Visitor from FL

Answer:
You are either going to dentists that don't understand occlusion-biting theories or you have some amazing parafunction.

Parafunction means bruxism, grinding, clenching or any other unnatural forces placed on a prosthesis-denture. I would suggest you have your lower arch examined.

Do you have crowns (another sign of past fractures of teeth from parafunction) bridges, or severe wear of the lower teeth?

Second, I would examine your musculature for excessive musculature, a sign of clenching. You should have a mouthguard made for your denture! This will be soft on the inside and hard on the outside and will take all stresses off of your denture.

You may not have a lab that is placing the metal areas appropriately or processing the acrylic properly.

You may want to have a cast metal denture base made - the best of which is all gold! This is the most unbreakable denture made, with a gold palate and steeles facings for the teeth with porcelain and acrylic on the front for the gums.

You can ask a prosthodontist about these issues and perhaps they can help you with this issue. Lastly, consider permanent teeth with implants. This will stabilize occlusal forces, diminish force to the plastic of a denture, restore even biting forces for upper and lower teeth and provide you with a stabilizer to prevent future bone loss - an incredible investment in your future health. I hope this helps.
