Dentures Ask The Dentist Richard Winter Question:
Upper Gum Deterioration: I have had upper dentures since the age of 20. I am now 61.

My gums were almost gone 15 years ago and I had surgery where they put something in the gums that hardened and became attached to the present gum.

This is now almost gone and I am afraid that I will very soon not be able to chew or wear dentures.

The surgeon who did the procedure told me that he could not do it again because it usually only lasted a couple of years and I was the exception.

What am I going to do now and where do I go? I need someone who will take the time to honestly try to help me. .... Visitor from AR

Answer:
I feel bad for your situation. You need to search dental health directories or find an implantologist in your area.

You can search the AAID American Academy of Implant Dentistry Directory for someone that can help you in your area.

Not only can grafts be done from your hip, shin, chin, etc., you can also have grafting to add bone with donated bone as well.

You just need to find someone with experience. The AOI or Academy of Osseointegration or the ICOI are other groups well versed in implant dentistry for people with very little bone left.

The reason for all of the implant referrals is that if you have insufficient bone for dentures the only way to prevent it from becoming worse is to fixate teeth or dentures via implant dentistry.

The use of subperiosteal implants is also an option for people that can't have grafting or implants due to severe bone loss! These involve frames that fit under the skin but over the bone for attaching a denture directly to the jaw, enabling patients to use dentures that will maintain normal eating, speaking, etc.
