Question:
Little Gum Tissue Left: I have dentures that need replacing.
The original mold was broken so I ended up with not so good dentures. I need new ones but I have very little gum tissue left.
Is there something than just dentures I'm going to need help for or should I have implants? ... Visitor from CA
Answer:
Bad Fitting Dentures
When gum tissue is lost under a denture, the real problem is the loss of jaw bone. The jaw bone slowly and painlessly shrinks and the dentures do not fit. As the dentures are worn, they get increasingly loose and the loose dentures actually increase the rate of jaw bone and gum loss.
It is a cycle of ill fitting dentures and bone loss. Eventually, the patient cannot chew well and uses large amounts of denture adhesives as Fixodent, Polygrip, Miracle Grip, Sea-Bond and Cushion Grip. The adhesives help but there is no substitute for a well made denture.
Well Made Dentures
There are many dynamic areas of concern in making great dentures. The fit to the gum and along the cheeks must be accurate. The bite on the denture is made much different than a bite on a person with real teeth. It is best to start with a quality set of dentures and get implants to support the denture.
Implant Supported Denture
Implants under the denture and attached to the denture add enormous support and stability. A well made denture combined with well placed implants can actually change the life of a patient. You can eat with power and chew effectively.
You will also have a big increase in confidence because your lips, face and bite are all supported and enhanced by the implants. It should be a huge improvement.
