Gum Disease and Dentures: Where I have missing teeth on top there looks like there is no gum.

Will I have trouble getting dentures? I have missing teeth on the bottom too.

I have periodontal disease but never had the money to get teeth fixed, but now I do. I hope its not too late. I don't want to be toothless. ...Visitor from NY

Answer:
The lack of gum is probably from the lack of bone under the skin. Bone loss is something that can lead to dentures getting loose as the less bone, the less retention for the denture.

Your periodontal disease is the reason for the bone loss on the top and bottom and should be addressed as soon as possible to stop the periodontal disease from progressing further.

You may be a candidate for grafting and implants to restore your mouth. The number of implants, the type and extent of grafting and the type of teeth you receive will depend on the investment you are willing to make. I wish you luck.
