Question:
Denture wax try in: My current dentures do not fit well after 5 years.
I'm having a new set of dentures made. After the impression taken, I went for a wax try in visit two weeks ago. My denturist put adhesive in the upper wax denture. I did not like the size and shape so he had me come in for another wax try in.
This time I told him not to use adhesive. The upper model would fall down whenever I tried to open my mouth to speak. My denturist said the wax model cannot be made to fit tightly but the final actual denture would fit properly.
Does it sound right? I remember the wax models for my old dentures were perfectly fit and I was able to open my mouth, speak, bite and close my mouth freely without adhesive. ...Visitor from AZ
Answer:
When denture impressions are taken we put wax on the model to protect it so that taking the trial base on and off will not hurt the impression.
As a result, often these trial bases or wax-rims with teeth are loose and don't stay in tight without adhesive. Your old denture may have not been waxed out as much and as a result, it fitted tighter.
Also you have undoubtedly lost bone from that denture to this one so natural aging and life with dentures will result in each successive denture getting looser and looser due to bone loss.
Dentures need bone for retention, loss of teeth results in bone loss, denture wear, friction and movement also contributes to bone loss.
So I would trust your dentist and if the dentures are not tight, discuss the reasons and solutions with them.
