Dentures Ask The Dentist Corinne Scalzitti Question:
Intimacy: I have a severe dental phobia, which has resulted in very poor teeth.

I have finally worked up courage to see a dentist who has recommended extractions and full dentures. I am comfortable with this. However, I have been worrying lately about intimacy.

I am quite young woman (36), I enjoy a healthy intimate life with my husband and am concerned about how wearing dentures might affect this.

My main areas of concern are during kissing, and during oral sex. I don't know if I am likely to experience difficulties, and can't find any answers, maybe because it's such a sensitive issue?

It's also not a subject I feel comfortable talking to my dentist about. I wonder if you could give me some advice? ...Visitor from UK

Answer:
I would suggest that you see another dentist to confirm the need for dentures. My husband is from the UK, and while good dentistry is available, I have observed that dentistry there is often not as conservative as in the US.

A private dentist may give you another opinion. Also, there are dentures that are supported by implants so that a rim of teeth snaps into the implants and is very stable. This is expensive, but a possibility.

Having said that, I understand your concerns. It is good that you have a secure relationship, so that should make adjustments easier. I really don't know the answers to your questions, but think that kissing would be fine with dentures. I would also assume that you may be more comfortable removing them for the other.

My suggestion is to ask people who have been there. I googled "denture wearers forum" and came up with one site that may help you. Here it is: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20071103103402AApC3Ya

I assume that there are many forums where people discuss their experiences, and this may help you.
