Question:
Reline or Implant Dentures: My father is 76 years old. He has lost bone in the lower jaw, affecting his lower denture.
It bothers him when he eats.
A dentist recommends an implant but at his age and diabetic condition I believe it is not a good idea. Do you think that a reline would be a good solution so he does not suffer any more when he eats?...Visitor from NM
Answer:
A reline may help your father. He may also be more comfortable with a soft reline that would need to be replaced every few months.
I have also been doing dentures with a product called Sunflex, which is flexible and softer than normal dentures, and have had good success with this.
Being a diabetic does not disqualify him from having implants, but it does decrease the chance of long term success.
I placed 4 mini-dental implants under a denture on a diabetic man with hypertension last week and think he has a good chance of success; it's healing very well.
Mini-implants would be less invasive and less expensive than traditional implants, so I would suggest that you look into these. You may have seen the video of this on my website, www.austinreconstructiveimplantdentist.com.
