Question:
New Denture Pain: I got new dentures about 2 months ago.
I have only been able to eat soup and very soft food that I essentially swallow. The dentures are painful and rock. I use an adhesive to try to minimize the rocking, but I am still unable to eat.
I went back to the dentist and he told me for at least 4 months I can expect this pain. I am anemic now and my immune system has been compromised.
I have been reading everything I can and the 4 months of pain doesn't seem reasonable. Is this normal? When I ask for an adjustment the dentist wants me to pinpoint the pain. I have so much pain it's hard to do.
Is there any way the dentist can see or tell where the sore spots are? ...Visitor from PA

This is not normal.
I would ask the dentist to put a soft liner in the denture. I use a product called Lynal and it works really well to cushion the denture and make it fit comfortably while the bone is healing and remolding after extractions.
I repeat this every few months during the healing period. You will probably need a laboratory reline after about a year to fit the dentures to how the bone has remolded.
You may want a second opinion since the dentist doesn't seem to be very concerned with your problems.
There are many ways to see where sore spots are. The oldest and easiest is called pressure indicator paste (PIP). It is a paste that you put on the inside of the denture, then insert the denture. The paste comes off where the denture fits too tightly and you reduce this spot for comfort.
I use this special paste about 10 times with a new denture to be sure that I have adjusted all places where the denture could cause discomfort.
