Question:
I would like to know at what point a dentist should advise a patient that it is time to consider dentures? I am 37 yrs old. My cavities are getting cavities. Every time I go to the dentist he finds another.

I am wondering if it is worth it to keep my back teeth, upper and lower, or if it would not be better to have them pulled and get partials. ...Claire in IN

Answer:
Claire, I wish I could answer your question, however it really depends on the condition of your teeth, the bone structure, the alignment, etc. If you have a capable dentist it is always a good idea to save what God gave you.

Any tooth you save, even a root, can be used for stabilizing a denture. If you keep getting cavities your dentist should talk to you about the reasons and conditions that are causing your problems: pop, candy, poor saliva, etc. You should immediately start using a Fluoride mouthrinse such as ACT Fluoride or a prescription form like Gel-Kam. This will help cut down on cavities.

Start using toothpicks betwen your teeth to toughen your gums and keep your teeth clean. Get a second opinion if you have to. You will regret losing your teeth. Dentures are always a last resort!
