Dentures Ask The Dentist Jeffrey Hoos Question:
Lower Dentures over 4 implants: To date I have seen 2 Dentists and I have had a total of 6 dentures made and then ended up having the bar and appliances remade with new dentures now making for #7.

I do expect some food to gather under the denture as it is not a perfect fit but not as much as I am getting now after the last go round.

Can you make a denture to fit over these implants and somehow make them so that you do not get a quantity of food underneath these dentures and ending up taking them out to clean in public just you can contine to smile and be happy while you eat ? ... Visitor from PA

Answer:
I am sure you are frustrated by not being able to get a satifactory fit. I am glad you have gotten your implants. Many times the expectation of what your dentures can or cannot do can not be met. That does not mean it can not happen and that you can not solve your problem. I of course can not see you and so I have to speak in general terms.

There are some methods that can be used to solve the "food under the denture problem".

The materials that are used are to create what is called a functional impression. The material is used on your denture and you wear your teeth and the material forms in your mouth while you chew. This allows for the maxium border extention of your denture. Once the functional impression is made and a reline is done from that impression, this should keep the food from under your denture.

This method is a two stage procedure and you will have to give up your teeth for a day while the denture is being processed by the lab. There is also a semi permanent method using a soft lining that can be done directly in your mouth.

Most dentists know about these methods and does not require a remake or a new denture.
