Question:
Teeth Under Dentures? My husband needs an upper denture and bridge on the bottom. Although his teeth are worn down, he has no missing teeth and no pain.
In order to save costs, his dentist has suggested grinding down his upper teeth and placing dentures over them to help support the denture. It would be less costly than surgical extraction.
He did not feel that root canals or crowning would be necessary. I would appreciate an opinion on leaving teeth under dentures. ... Visitor from FL
Answer:
Leaving teeth under dentures is just fine. The roots preserve bone, act as support "stops" for the denture and may be used for root attachments when and if desired.
You should be aware that if the teeth aren't cut down alot (almost flush with the gumline) they will cause remaining acrylic in the denture to become weak due to being thin. I think that if you can afford a bridge on the bottom, you may be able to get root canals and ball attachments for a reasonable fee and reallly improve your husbands ability to bite, chew and taste his food.
I have seen overdentures holding on to 4 roots that allow people to eat, chew and really enjoy their dentures! Be aware that even if the dentist doesn't plan on root canals - if you grind down the teeth and they get sensitive they will require root canals.
Also ask your dentist how much it would cost for copings to protect the remaining tooth structure.
