Question:
Upper Plate Gagging: I have a gag problem with my original dentures which seem heavy.
I am told I can have better quality ones for more cost. They are called BPS (cast upper). I do not understand what the difference is. ... Visitor from Ontario Canada
Answer:
Cast denture bases can be thinner than traditional dentures but are more difficult to reline, are heavier and more costly.
Gagging has less to do with thickness and more to do with palatal extension. Have your dentist adjust your dentures until the gagging goes away. If they can't do this go to another dentist for a second opinion.
Sometimes I have to make a horseshoe design to avoid gagging. If your dentist can't satisfy you with your first denture they shouldn't continue with a second one!
Try to get proper adjustments and then together with your dentist you can decide if a cast gold base is warranted. Good luck
