FAQ:  Diastema

Question:
My son is going to be 15 next month. He got a palette spreader a few months ago but no braces.

Right after they put it in, they told me he would get a gap in his teeth. The gap appeared around 2 weeks later. We were not prepared for how big it has gotten. They say everything looks good.

His front teeth have tilted towards each other, from the bottom. Now they look like they are going to overlap. How far do I let this go? Is this normal?

I can't afford braces and the doctor said he would get a retainer. We have been back early 2 times concerning this and I hate to be a pain. Thoughts? ...Visitor from OR

Answer:
Braces will likely have to be installed in a fairly timely manner to prevent whatever movement is now occuring from becoming exaggerated.

There may be an unusual occlusal event between the upper and lower jaw that is influencing or causing the unusual movement.

Consider applying for services at local dental schools. Most schools offer a reduced fee program for eligible patients and families.
