Dry Socket: Symptoms - Relief
Question:
I had a upper jaw tooth pulled 3 days ago and still hurt.
I can't get a doctor to look at it. It is not so bad that I can't live with it but I would like to know if you think I should still be hurting. .... Visitor from TX
Answer:
I am sorry that you are in pain and cannot get the doctor to look at your extraction site. You could have many things going on.
The most likely is a dry socket (insufficient blood clot to cover the bone in the socket), which is very painful. A dentist could put a special gauze with numbing medicine on it to make you more comfortable.
Or, he or she may need to numb you and clean the site to help you form a new blood clot. You could also have an infection (is your temperature above 100 degrees?). If this is the case, you will need to see a dentist or physician to evaluate your need for antibiotics.
Or, you could have a tiny opening into your sinus (oral - antral fistula) that would cause a bad taste in your mouth. If you have a sinus opening you should also be on antibiotics and an antihistamine. Also, if you sneeze, you should try to keep your mouth open.
Whatever is going on, you really should be evaluated by a dentist or physician as soon as possible. I cannot see you to evaluate. You may have normal post-operative pain, or may have a potential or existing emergency condition. Please seek medical help as soon as possible.
