Question:
I had my lower tooth pulled - the one next to my wisdom tooth about 3 months ago. I had severe pain before the extraction. I took an antibiotic 2 weeks before the extration but the pain did not go away. After three months the healing process has not ended yet.
I still have a red "mark" in my jaw where the tooth used to be. There is no big hole just a little one It looks like a scar and sometimes gets very red. I'm an American working in Poland and I have no idea what to do. Is this normal or should I pack my bags and return to see my dentist? ...Visitor from IL / Poland
Answer:
When a tooth is removed from the bone the resultant hole is filled in with blood. This blood forms a clot and will start the healing process. The gum tissue grows over the blood clot and the clot will then rearrange to form bone.
Bone takes a long time to grow. If the extraction was difficult, large or the healing process is interrupted for some reason, then the hole will take a longer time to heal.
Is there any pain? does the area still bleed? and did any bone splinters come out? Sometimes as the bone is healing, islands of bone may form. This can be due to the infection, trauma during the extraction or a change in the blood supply to the bone. These bone splinters will delay the healing and will work their way out of the mouth and will take some time.
