  • Braces: I will be turning 15 soon and I have an overbite and a gap around 5mm [maybe?] between my front two top teeth. I've been refused braces by my dentist although my gap bothers me. I don't think I can financially afford private treatment however. What can I appeal for if there is anything? ... Visitor from England     (answer)

  • 6 months after braces: I had worn a NTI devise for 1 yr which gave slight open bite. My teeth were straight but one excisor was turned. I wore braces upper only for 2 years. I noticed that my bite matched but my upper jaw moved far enough back to make me look like a flatter upper lip. I have worn a retainer for 6 months now and on my next visit to the orthodontist I will bring up concerns. In the morning my upper teeth touch lower and is causing a slight chip in front top tooth. My regular dentist wants me to wear old night guard and to do a fill in of chip. OK, so I can see the money piling up here. With just my retainer from ortho, I can feel more tension in TMJ and very slight tinge in front tooth that is chipped. SO..my old night guard takes tension off TMJ at night but what do i need to do? any chance of moving my front teeth forward a bit and still protect teeth like a mouth guard? ... Visitor from Detroit     (answer)

  • Braces after bone grafting: My daughter was in a car accident and she shattered her jaw. Five months after initial surgery, she had bone grafting from her hip onto her upper jaw where there are 2 teeth missing. It's been 6 weeks since her last surgery and the dentist wants to put her braces on now. Is it too soon to do it? He has explained that braces won't touch bone graft at all. We are unsure whether it's too soon though. ... Visitor from Lakewood     (answer)

  • Underbite developed after braces - 13 year old girl: My 13 year old daughter is being treated for spacing and a slight overbite. A Pallet expander was used and a mold taken before braces were applied showed a very slight overbite. Flash forward 5/6 months and now my daughter had developed a class 3 malocclusion and my ortho recommends I speak to an oral surgeon. Did the braces and springs affect upper jaw growth? From birth to right before braces were applied her jaws were in line with each other. ... Visitor from Wakefield     (answer)

  • I'm 14. About 8 months ago I got my top two canines pulled and they are still not grown in yet. My dentist says that he can put braces on, after they grow in. Is it mandatory to wait for them to grow in? My friend has braces and her canines aren't grown in either and she just has brackets in front of the gap. Why can't my orthodontist / dentist do that? I'm tired of waiting because the gap and my teeth bother me. ... Visitor from Asheville     (answer)

  • Canine and braces: I have an adult canine on my top left side that grew out between my bicuspids (the baby canine is still intact) and my orthodontist said that there wasn't any way to move it to its rightful spot because there isn't enough bone to work with. He said that all he could do is move the bicuspid to where the canine should be and vice versa. Is it really impossible to move it to its proper spot? I would feel extremely self conscious about having the two teeth "flipped". The ortho assured me I don't show enough gum in my smile for anyone to notice, but I would notice! And I have more "vampire shaped" canines so I feel it would be obvious. Should I seek a second opinion? ... Visitor from Tucson     (answer)

  • My 11 year old son's lower jaw is not growing with his top jaw. The orthodontist wants to pull two teeth at the top and put in braces. I am worried that his facial structure will be off. Also how will pulling teeth from top make his bottom jaw line up? ... Visitor from Lake Charles     (answer)

  • Braces and bone loss: I have a gap between my two front teeth. I am scheduled to get braces next week. I have 30% bone loss with one of my front teeth due to periodontal disease. Will my tooth fall out? I have the disease under control now, but I'm so afraid of losing my tooth. ... Visitor from Lancaster     (answer)

  • Bracket Placement: I just got the Damon self-ligating braces put on. I have looked at hundreds of pics online and do not see brackets that are so offcenter as mine are, particularly my two front upper teeth. Is there any situation where a bracket should be placed closer to the side of the tooth than the middle of the tooth? These two teeth are very slightly rotated. Do you suggest I see another ortho for an opinion? ... Visitor from Deer Park     (answer)

  • My two front teeth gap: I have had braces for almost a year, and the orthodontist says I might have 2 or 3 more visits with him until I can officially take off my braces. But the thing is my 2 front teeth are nowhere near closing! One of my front tooth is twisted and the other one is straight. I asked my orthodontist and he said that the gap might not close, because something about my teeth not being a square shape? But my teeth are perfectly shaped, and I KNOW one of my tooth is crooked because I can feel it. So my question is, Can my gap close? I don't have much time left with braces and I don't think I'm any where near done, I still have a big gap! What'll happen when I take my braces off with a noticeable gap? ... Visitor from Baton Rouge     (answer)

  • I am 55 years old and considering braces. I am missing one front upper tooth and have a very deep bite. The other five upper teeth have veneers and lots of fillings. Two orthodontists have said they can improve my bite which will reduce the wear on all of my teeth. The goal being to keep my natural teeth as long as possible. In your opinion is that a correct assessment or should I just get an implant to replace the missing tooth and not get braces first? ...Visitor from San Antonio     (answer)

  • My 11 yr. old daughter was recently told by her pediatric dentist/orthodontist that she would need braces not for cosmetic reasons (her teeth are straight) but because her bite is a "little" off in back.Last 4 teeth on top and bottom were not lining up. He said she would need a full set for 2 years. This seems extreme to me. When I raised my concerns, he said she could have problems as an adult if not fixed. Can you further explain? ...Visitor from KS     (answer)

  • I had my braces when I was 15 to fix my teeth, but it involved removing an impacted tooth. So it was removed and I had the braces. I had it for about a year and it made my teeth better, however I developed an underbite (the dentist told me that this was the cause of removing the impacted teeth). She made me use some sort of hardened mold to fix the underbite, but we had a severe argument and we never finished. The braces are gone and I don't use the hardened mold anymore, and it's been 2-3 years since that happened. Is there anyway to fix my underbite? The left side of my teeth are aligned but when it gets to the center to the right there's an underbite. ...Visitor from Phillipines     (answer)

  • Alternative to Braces? My 12 year old son was told by his dentist and the orthodontist that he needs braces because his K9s have no room to grow down. When he was 3 years old he had to have surgery and have all his back baby teeth removed due to liquid epilepsy meds rotting his teeth. They put silver caps on all the spaces with spacers. He only has one of these caps left, but his teeth are spread too far apart and there is no room for his adult K9s. Is there any alternative to braces in his case? None of his teeth are crooked and he has no cavities and takes very good care of his teeth. Any suggestions you may have would be great! ...Visitor from TN     (answer)

My braces have been off about a year and I don't wear my retainer in hopes the teeth will migrate back. Is there anyway to reverse this like opening the bite and pulling teeth forward? I wouldn't even mind having the spaces. I am looking for any alternatives. I don't know why my orthodondist didn't explain this too me before extracting. ...Visitor from CA     (answer)

  • I had braces when I was 12 1/2 yrs old. Got them off when I was 15. I wore my retainers for many years faithfully. About a year ago, my bottom retainer broke. I am a full time student and don't have much money. I was dismayed to see one of my teeth moved. When I got my retainers, my tooth was like that until the retainer was put in aligned position. It was fine until my retainer broke. I am wondering if I should get a new retainer as soon as possible? My teeth are the same so far, except for that one tooth that moved. I'm getting nervous going this long without a retainer for fear of other teeth shifting sooner or later. Should I get a new retainer as soon as possible? They're very expensive nowadays. I hear they can go as high as $400 apiece. ...Visitor from IL     (answer)
