FAQ:  Diastema

  • I have five gaps at the top of my mouth. I want to know of some other ways that I can close them up without getting braces. ...Visitor from Baltimore MD     (answer)

  • My son is going to be 15 next month. He got a palette spreader a few months ago but no braces. Right after they put it in, they told me he would get a gap in his teeth. The gap appeared around 2 weeks later. We were not prepared for how big it has gotten. They say everything looks good. His front teeth have tilted towards each other, from the bottom. Now they look like they are going to overlap. How far do I let this go? Is this normal? I can't afford braces and the doctor said he would get a retainer. We have been back early 2 times concerning this and I hate to be a pain. Thoughts? ...Visitor from OR     (answer)

  • Peristent gap: Around age 26 or 27 I began to notice my two front teeth began developing a gradual space between them. Now it has been 10 years and the gap is big enough to stick part of my tongue through. I was given a plastic retainer a while back to wear at night for 1 year but that wasn't successful The minute I took it off in the morning the space would return. I was wanting to know if a permanent retainer could be put on the inside of my teeth to hold the teeth together? I believe the cause of this is either the removal of my wisdom teeth or the skin on roof of my mouth spreading the teeth. ...Visitor from CA     (answer)

  • Close Spacing between teeth idea: Instead of always looking towards the tooth to close the gaping, why hasn't the industry thought of using some kind of gum colored epoxy? I am just starting to get little spaces between all my teeth. The spaces are just big enough to bother me but small enough that in order to use veneers or crowns, a lot of grinding would be involved. Isn't there some kind of epoxy that can be colored to the gums and some how bonded to the teeth? The cost is enormous and not covered by insurance as you know. ...Visitor from MI     (answer)

  • Best Treatment for Wide Gap: I have a gap in my two top teeth about 1/4 inch wide and one of the front teeth is slightly crooked. I'm at an age where I'd like the fastest option of closing the gap and making them normal without making them look big and fake. What is my best (quickest) option. ...Visitor from NY     (answer)

  • I read your info on tooth gaps and I wanted to know what you thought about using rubberbands called Teeth Effect Band that is advertised on the internet to close small gaps. Do you think bands wrapped around the front teeth can close a gap and do you think it is safe? ...Visitor from Hawaii     (answer)
