A couple of years ago I had a tooth filled. When the dentist was done
drilling he said 'I'm looking at your nerve.' I figured it as I take nothing
for fillings. Well about a year later the tooth got infected and started to
hurt so back to the dentist I went. He took xrays and said the tooth was infected and needed to be extracted. I made appointment to see an oral surgeon. They recommended general anesthesia. On the the day of my appointment my blood pressure was high and the doctor talked me out of getting the tooth pulled and said it wasn't that bad. I made second appointment 6 months later and my blood pressure was really high and he elected not to pull tooth again and suggested I see a family doctor. I did and now I have hypertension under control. Now I'm out of work and have no insurance. Tooth does not hurt, but I do get a gum boil every now and then on gum with bad tooth. My question: Is it necessary to have general anesthesia for an extraction which I think is overkill for a single tooth and very costly. And how long can this condition go without treatment. My thoughts are that the tooth is infected and has caused a fistula and that lets the infection out and that's why I don't experience pain. Am I right? (answer)
