  • Clicking turning to pain: I am 21 and about 8 years ago my jaw started to click when opening very wide. After about a year it began to click when I chewed on something hard and progressed within 6 months to almost constantly when I chew or open my mouth about half way or more. I asked my dentist who told me it is normal, due to the fact that I have had a LONG dental history. He also said probably the only way to fix it is surgery to reset my jaw. Is there something I can do before surgury to try and avoid it? Is there some type of specialists I can go to? I can't really afford the surgery but the pain is becoming unbearable. ... • Clicking jaw: The right side of my jaw has been clicking for the last eight months. It started after I had dental work in June. My jaw would not open for a day or two, and it's been clicking on the right side ever since. It happens when I'm eating, yawning, laughing. I find it very frustrating and uncomfortable. My usual dentist told me to wear a mouth guard because it might be caused by grinding or clenching. Another dentist referred me to a TMJ specialist, but the cost isn't covered by my insurance. Would you recommend that I get a mouth-guard first and try that out before going to see a specialist? ... Visitor from Canada     (answer)

  • Click - locking - burning: For the past 4 months my jaw has been clicking and occasionally locking. About 5 days ago I had all four of my wisdom teeth removed. I am now feeling an almost stinging / burning sensation in my cheek just below the ear on my right side. Also I cannot open my jaw more than one inch wide. A few months ago I had my tonsils removed and my jaw didn't seem to be affected. What can I do to immediately relieve the burning in my cheek? I am more concerned with the discomfort more than than the locked jaw itself? ... Visitor from NY     (answer)
