FAQ:  Jaw Surgery

  • I had jaw surgery 20 years ago and had the joints shaved down so there would be smoother movement. I had such excruciating pain the only thing that would help was morphine. When I had the surgery I was vomiting for 18 hours straight and my jaw healed improperly. I could only open my mouth approximately 1 inch. After considerable therapy I could open it again. But now after all these years, the pain is back with a vengeance. Could you help me with what I could do? Do I need more surgery? My doctor wants to put me on clonazepam for the rest of my life ... Visitor from British Columbia Canada     (answer)

  • I got into a fight and I got my mouth wired. After the wires were taken out my jaw is still not normal. My back teeth are normal but the front have like an overbite. What should I do to fix this problem. ... Visitor from NY     (answer)

  • Jaw Surgery without Braces? I am 23 years of age and I have fairly good teeth. The only problem that bothers me (I have two crooked bottom teeth that does not trouble me) is my extreme overbite. I was about 16 when my dentist told me about the corrective Jaw Surgery and how my lower jaw recedes too much just for braces. My question is since my overbite goes beyond braces can I just get the jaw surgery without braces? My concern is only my receding jaw and not my crooked teeth. My results do not have to be perfect either, just "good enough." ... Visitor from CA     (answer)

  • Thin Jaw Bone I had my #17 wisdom tooth extracted. It was impacted. The oral surgeon showed me in pre and post procedure x-rays that the jaw bone where the tooth was removed from is only 5 milimeters thick and has a gap the size of the tooth, and there is a chance of breaking. I'm 40 years old. At my age will the jaw bone rejuvanate and fill the open gap area? I lead a rather physical life style (karate). ... Visitor from IL     (answer)

  • Arthroscopic surgery - TMJ Pain: For a year and a half, I've had a serious jaw problem. I've seen 6 doctors, two being oral surgeons. One did arthroscopic surgery on my left jaw joint because my disc is too large. He shaved off some of the joint to give the disc more room. The surgery worked for 3 weeks after. Then, the pain returned. I have horrible pain in both the right and left side of my jaw. My doctor knows and says he doesn't know what to do. I can't eat solid food, yawning hurts, and it hurts when I'm not doing anything. Opening my mouth, I get to about 30 mm and it won't go any farther. It's very painful. I'm 16 years old, and don't want to be in pain for life. ... Visitor from WI     (answer)

  • Jaw Surgery - Treatment for underbite: I am a 21 year old male, who consulted about fixing an underbite at 18. It was cost prohibitive, but I now have an insurance that would cover the surgery and am interested again. I was told that I would need braces for 6 months before and after. I would also like to have veneers done on my top 8 teeth and bottom 8. My question is if I want veneers which cover my teeth, do I need braces for the surgery? ... Visitor from AR     (answer)
