FAQ:  Congenitally Missing Teeth

Tooth Replacement Choices
  • Missing Adult Teeth: My 8 year old son will be missing 20 of his adult teeth most of them being molars. He has 4 teeth on the front bottom and only 2 front top teeth. My concern is how long will he be able to keep his baby teeth, with proper care? Also what causes something like this to happen? The denntist who informed me of this just said it happens. I also asked if he would put sealants on his baby teeth to try and preserve them for as long as I could and he said no since he didn't have any cavities. Would this be something I should do? I have searched all over the internet and can't find out why this happened. When do adult teeth form and could it have been due to anitbiotics during that time? ... Visitor from FL     (answer)

  • Missing Teeth: I was told at the age of 9 that I would have to have most of my permanent teeth removed. Now I am 30 and am only left with 9 teeth in my mouth. I recently went to a dentist to see if I could get implants and I was told that there would be no way possible to get implants and that the bone in my mouth would be incapable of handling implants. I have lived with this problem all of my life and it has been very hard to live my life without teeth. Being teased as a child for being without teeth up until my high school years has been very hard and I don't want having dentures as my last resort. I would love to open up my mouth one day and be able to smile without embarrassment. ... Visitor from TX     (answer)

  • Do missing canines need to be fixed? I am 26 years old and have known I am missing my upper canines since I was very small. I recently had an occlusal adjustment to fix my bite. My new dentist is telling me that that is not enough and I need to get a crown or other material to create "canines" so that I do not grind my teeth down so far they are useless. I don't know if drastic action is necessary since I have never been told this before. I know congenital missing canines are very common and am wondering if they always need to be fixed? ...
