  • I am 14 and have been to three orthodontists about staightening my 4 frount teeth. My family dentist said that I didn't have to have braces, it was just cosmetic. My mom took me to the orthodontists and all 3 said well they may as well go on and fix every little thing and keep them on for 2+ yrs. Why? All I want is my eye teeth straightened. A friend mom works in an ortho. Office and she has invisable braces and says hey would work for me in very little time but no Dr. In my area wants to do that. Why do all orthodontists think like this? ...Emily in KY     (answer)

  • My 1 1/2 year old daughter has an underbite. What procedure is typically followed to correct these types of bites? How common of a problem is this? ...Jennifer in MI     (answer)

  • My 13 year old daughter is in need of braces and we have spoken to three different orthodontists and have gotten different approaches to fixing her smile. One is recommending using appliances to "expand her jaw" and thus create the space needed for straight teeth. Another Orthodontist says that extraction of existing teeth is the way to create the space needed. Yet another tells us that the jaw CANNOT be successfully and permanently altered with out surgery. HELP!!! How does this expansion technique work? How long has it been used?? What are the pros and cons of this method?? PLEASE let me know what the latest on this subject is. ... Sid in MI     (answer)

  • I am 18 years old and am currently entering my 5th year with braces. I have been patient throughout the entire process and have recently been told to wear elastics on my braces to fix my bite. From what I have been told my teeth only need to move about 3mm. The problem is that the elastics give me really bad, constant headaches. I am becoming increasingly less patient with the process and want them off. It is not the fact that they hurt me, it is more that the elastics are not very sociable and people look at me as though I have spit or food stuck in my mouth. I cannot really see the point in going through all of this to correct a tiny little problem which doesn't actually affect my everyday life. What I would like to know is whether or not I can demand to have them taken off and if so, what types of ramifications can I expect later in life if this tiny problem with my bite is not corrected. ...Daniel in Campbelltown, New South Wales, Australia     (answer)

  • How should someone with a very large gap in there two front teeth go about getting there teeth fixed? ...Dwayne in MD     (answer)

  • I went to an orthodontist today. I have diastema in my upper set of teeth and an overbite. He suggested to have one of my central incisors extracted to provide space for my protruding upper teeth to move. Is this an uncommon practice? Will it make my lower teeth assymmetrical since one tooth is out? Will it affect my bite? ...Georgina in Baltimore, MD     (answer)

  • I had othodontic work carried out for the last 18 moths now and in the next 2 months I will get my lingual braces out. My othodontist tells me that I will have to weear a retainer (in the top part of my mouth) for the rest of my life, to stop the teeth moving back in again. This is to be worn at night in conjunction with fixed retainers on the back of some of my teeth I think. I thought the idea of wearing the retainer was that after a couple of years, you could stop wearing it, since the teeth would now be fixed in their final permanent positions. Can you advise on any other method that would fix my teeth in place without the need to wear a retianer for the rest of my life, it seems a bit of a drastic course of treatment. Thanks ...Jon in Dundee, Scotland     (answer)

  • Hi, I have had my braces off for over a year now and have been wearing retainers since then. I am unhappy with one of my teeth because it is further back than the rest of them. I went to the orthodontist today and had an impression done for a new retainer to fix this problem. They said they could put an attachment on the new retainer that would push my tooth forward. What is the name of this attachment and how long will I have to wear it? Can I just wear it at night? Thanks ...Kristin     (answer)

  • My 12 year old daughter has an underbite where the upper front teeth have pushed her lower teeth back, thus, her uppers are over her lowers even with the underbite. She was evaluated by an orthodontist today who says her upper jaw or palate is small and not growing fast enough and her bottom jaw is growing too fast. He recommends a palate extender on her upper jaw, to be worn approx. 3 months. The extender would be permanently attached and I would use a tool to expand the appliance on a scheduled basis at home with regular visits to assess progress. He then wants to re-evaluate before proceeding with braces. Is this extender appliance treatment appropriate and common for this type of problem at age 12? If surgery would ever be required what would the surgery procedure involve? What results are reasonable to expect from the extender therapy/braces for and underbite without surgery? ...Karen in NC     (answer)

  • I have an overbite of about 1/4 of an inch. I'm not afraid of getting braces but I am afraid of getting teeth pulled. Just wondering if it is likely that I would have to get some teeth pulled to fix an overbite of this size? ... Jim in PA     (answer)

  • I recently had my braces removed and have not been able to wear my acrylic retainer regularly because it seems to make me sick...is there a possibility that I could be allergic to it? If so what are some of the sypmtoms I should look for. ...Jennifer in OR     (answer)

  • How long is a permanent retainer worn behind the front teeth? What is used to remove it if it is to be removed or does it fall out over time?     (answer)

  • I've been wearing braces for about four years. The process is long and it doesn't seem to be working. Is there another suggestion or another way in having a brighter smile? ...Visitor from MI     (answer)

  • I just got my braces off today. When I close my mouth, my teeth look fine, but when you look up at my teeth from below, there's a space between the upper and lower 4 teeth. I think that they should be touching. Is that right? I asked my orthodontist about it, but she said that it was normal. Should there be a space? My upper teeth go over my lower teeth a little bit, which I think is normal, but it's just that there's spaces in between them. If I try to bite on a piece of paper, I can't clamp on it; it just slides right out. ...Visitor from WA     (answer)

  • I am getting my braces off in four weeks. My orthodontist has informed me that I will have to wear a mouth gaurd for four days and then at night. What is the reason for wearing this and will I be able to talk with it at work? ...Visitor from MN     (answer)
