I was told that I should get my jaw broken prior to getting braces on. I'm 30 years old and I would really rather not go through this because I have been hearing medical reports (on TV) stating that people who have had this procedure done 10 to 15 years ago, are now having problems with their jaw. Is this absolutely necessary to do before I get my braces on? I have a slight overbite.. you can hardly notice. My doctor said that if I didn't get the surgery that the braces will bring my top teeth back to meet my bottom teeth but in doing that... my jaw/chin profile wouldn't be as defined as it is now. Basically it would look like I didn't have a chin. I would rather not look like a turtle!

Pain related to maxiofacial surgery:
In 1983 I had a malocllusion. I had just joined the Navy and while in boot camp I was sent over to the dental hospital for evaluation. They concluded that my jaw could be aligned properly. Being that it was a
$20,000.00 surgery and performed free of charge thanks to milatary service, it seemed like a good idea. The surgery was quite invasive. It involved both upper and lower mandibals. My lower jaw was shortend and my upper jaw widened. After the surgery and since I have had problems. Mostly involving the right side of my head. My right ear has constant pressure all the time. What has worked is Oxycotin for the pain. But with all the bad press and phobias to narcotics in society it is not easy to deal with. What options do I have to get this problem taken care of for good? ... Visitor from NC (answer)

- Overbite Surgery without Braces: My lower jaw is set further back than my top jaw resulting in a gummy smile, difficulty closing my mouth and keeping it closed, aching in my jaw etc. I am hoping to have corrective surgery but I don't like the thought of having to wear braces, making my mouth look even uglier than it is already. I want to know if I have my crooked front teeth removed, top and bottom, and replaced with a bridge of new perfect teeth can I still have corrective jaw surgery and not the braces? ... - Front Teeth Overlap: My four front teeth overlap the bottom teeth (they go about half way down) and they are splayed out. I had braces about 5 years ago but I wasn't happy with the results so last year I had 4 veneers placed on the front teeth. Although they are much better I am still very unhappy with the way they point out of my mouth rather than downwards. I went to see another orthodontist before I had my veneers and was told that my lower jaw was longer than my top one and that's why the teeth were like they are. I am confused as the rest of the teeth are fine. Is there anyway that I can correct this without surgery? ....Visitor from Birmingham United Kingdom UK (answer)

- Combining Invisalign with Orthognathic Surgery: I had braces on when I was 14, and I had them on for about 6 1/2 years. I was going to get maxillofacial surgery in order to correct my class 3 bite. I have had my braces off for about 8 years, and I am now 29. My teeth have remained VERY straight, and I am now considering moving forward with surgery years later. Since I do not wish to have metal braces, is there a way for the orthognathic surgery to be done by first having any orthodontic work with Invisalign? I already saw an orthodontist, and he stated that there would be very little work needed for my teeth done prior to any surgery. Please advise if Invisalign would be possible with surgery ....Visitor from PA (answer)
