- About 4 months ago I started feeling a pain in my upper gums on the right side of my mouth. So I went to see an oral surgeon. He told me that the pain was caused by wisdom teeth which hadn't been removed. So in November I got all 4 removed. About a month after I felt the pain again so I went back to the oral surgeon. He didn't see anything wrong with my gums. It's now February and I'm still feeling the same pain. I feel a throbbing sensation in either my upper or lower gum/jaw on the right side. What do you think the problem could be? Also, which kind of dentist should I make an appointment with? ...Visitor from FL (answer)
- I am a 68 year old male. For the past three or four weeks I have experienced pain on the lower left side of my mouth. At first it seemed that I was experiencing a sensitive sensation when I drank cold drinks. For the past few days I am experiencing much more pain, however it is when I have hot drinks or eat hot food. Orginally it seemed to be the second molar from the back---now it is my entire left lower side of teeth and even seems to becoming sensitive on the upper left side. My dentist X-rayed the lower part last week, however it did not reveal any obvious problems. ...Visitor from UT (answer)
- I had a root canal last year in July. I still had pain so the dentist advised me to have a apicoectomy which I had done in the following November - apicoectomy/periadicular anterior #6 and retrograde per root. I still had severe pain and the oral surgeon extracted the tooth in December. I am still having pain in my gums, and it goes up into my sinuses. I did go back to the oral surgeon after several weeks and he can't understand why I was still having pain. At present the whole side of my face is painful. Should I go to an ENT physcian or back to the oral surgeon? ...Visitor from NY (answer)
- About a year 1/2 ago, my top teeth were extracted, and soon after my 3 back bottom teeth on each side. The dentist that did this lied to me - whereby I had seven healthy front top teeth at the time, and before he pulled them I asked him if there was any way at all we could save them, even with a top partial, he told me no that top partials were not an option because they didn't stay in. I feel badly because I trusted him. Two months after my teeth were taken out, I found out that saving teeth is the preference and top partials are an option! I have been in constant pain since and progressively getting worse, primarily on my top. I kept going back to the dentist that pulled them and he kept saying I shouldn't be in pain. He then sent me to an acupunturist who didn't help. Needless to say, since then I have seen a periodontist, a general dentist, an ENT, 2 Allergists, and a neurologist. No one can find anything wrong. I am frustrated because it is too painful to wear my top plate, I cannot eat and sleeping is difficult. Right now the front of my gums swell and the point where the piece of skin that attaches to the gums on the top front is very sensitive/sore and the pain goes from there back to the roof of my mouth and the middle of the roof of my mouth swells as well. Even if I gently press my tongue on the front of the roof of my mouth, I get a pain shooting up my face. I have been referred to "another" dentist to be evaluated for TMD. The periodontist I saw said he can't find anything wrong and the general dentist he referred me to, just shook his head and said I shouldn't be feeling any pain there. I was so messed up over Christmas that I was in the ER 3 times. They concluded my neck was spasming causing my left arm numbness and headaches. The neurologist gave me a muscle relaxer which has relaxed the spasms in my neck and on the left side of my face, but I still have a lot of pain in my mouth, too much to wear my top plate and it's getting difficult to eat even soft foods with my gums -in the last six weeks I've lost 15 lbs and still loosing. I am soo tired of being patranized and being told I shouldn't be in pain. I am 36, well educated, in otherwise excellent health, and at the end of my rope. I'm not sure where to turn. ...Visitor from MT (answer)
- I am experiencing a pain that is not like a toothache. It occurs and lingers for about 5 mins or so...but it is excruciating when it happens. I went to the dentist yesterday and Xrays show no sign of decays or a nerve that has been affected in any way. The dentist isn't sure if this is something that is still in developmental stages. All I know is it hurts and taking an anti-flammatory doesn't seem to help. It subsides and comes back either when I drink something that isn't warm or when I eat something as simple as an orange. What is causing this. It almost feels like something cold is resting on my teeth. ...Visitor from PA (answer)
- I've had this sharp pain in the in my gum (top) on left about 6 tooth back in the crack area where the floss goes in to clean between the two teeth for over 4 years. I've been to two dentists, one said he didn't know, and could not find anything. The other gave me a prescription for some expensive sinus clearing medicine. Didn't work. I can't even think about cleaning with floss and if I accidentally bite
down too hard, it hurts bad. Whenever I do ease some floss between the teeth, and remove it I've been
smelling it to see if it was deteriorating or something? But no foul scent. It hurts like hell, but I can't afford to keep jumping from chair to chair with wrong or no diagnosis. ...Visitor from South Dakota (answer)
- I have been having problems with my mouth for 1 year now. I have what you call a phantom toothache. I have had 4 teeth extracted because of this. It goes from one side of my mouth to the other. It is every day. Basically my question is how to tell the difference between TMJ pain and deep
filled cavity pain? I don't know if I should have a root canal or extraction. I know it wouldn't help with TMJ. I am having pain on the one side where no teeth are high up inside my cheek on the gum. I had surgery where they lifted the gum and did two biopsies. They were normal. Could the surgeon not
have got the right spot? ...Visitor from PA (answer)
- The only dental pain I have ever had is from my molars. At the begining of Febuary just one of my lower frot teeth started huting really bad. I took pain medicine but nothing happend. Then i noticed a bump on my gums next to a tooth that wasn't huting on the bottom . A week later all my front lower teeth were hurting. I saw a dentist and he couldn't find anything wrong. He said my teeth look healthy in the x-rays. He put me on antibiotics but it didn't help. A couple days later my lower gums swelled up
really bad and were really red. Salt water and mouthwash weren't helping. My jaws and cheekbones would hurt while i slept. A couple weeks later after feeling a little better I had an appointment with a different dentist. He said my gums were just swollen and the bump on my gums will go away with salt water. He precribed me Chlorhexidine Gluconate oral rince. Now its been 2 weeks since i saw the last dentist. Ive been using the oral rince, brushing 3 times a day and flossing 2 times a day but nothing is helping. Now my top teeth are huting and top gums are swollen real bad. The bump on my gum is still there and doesn't hurt but I'm really worried about whats going on with my mouth. I'm only 22. Are dentures in my future if this doen't go away. Is there any advise on what i should do untill I go see the dentist in 6 months. Everyone thinks this pain is all in my head. ...Visitor from OH (answer)
- For several years I have had a feeling of swelling or pressure under and in my lower left teeth. I had root canals and finally extractions in teeth 20 and 19. I've finally figured out that what helps me most is to drink thru a straw and have all food and drinks lukewarm. I avoid sweets, acidic foods, salty foods, mouthwashes and most toothpastes because they intensify the pressure for hours. My mouths feels best when I get up in the morning before I eat or drink. Twice I've had an area down low behind 2 of the other teeth
get very sore and tender to the touch but it disappears in a day or two. I cannot replace the missing teeth because any rubbing or touching of the gum intensifies the feelings of pressure. Nothing ever shows up on the X-rays and my dentist told me I don't have a dental problem that he can see. My ENT and a pain doctor have been treating it as a nerve problem with drugs as the only option. I would like more tests--what should I ask for ...Visitor from Alaska (answer)
- I have had toothaches for about a year or so, always on the top and half way back. One day one side will hurt, then the next day the other side will hurt. Sometimes I can go a couple of days with no pain. I have been to 2 dentists and found nothig wrong. I also went to an ENT - he did a complete catscan of my head to look at my sinuses. He then said that my sinuses all look good but gave me some nasalcort nosespray. After 2 weeks I went back and he acted suprised that the nosespray didn't work. He then said we could try to enlarge your sinus openings, but there is no promise of it working. Couldn't he see from my x-rays that my sinus openings needed opening or not? The toothache is usually accompied with a headach, but that is it. I don't have sinus pressure under my eyes or mucus draing in my mouth, or am I congested. I don't want to have the surgery if it is not going to work. ...Visitor from OH (answer)
- Lower gum pressure/pain: For the past several days, I have been suffering from a constant
aching in my front lower gums, well under the teeth. It almost feels as though my teeth are moving, or are being pressured from impaction. I have had this feeling in the past when my wisdom teeth were coming in, and assumed then that the pain resulted from shifting of my lower teeth to accommodate the wisdom teeth. Now, however, my wisdom teeth are fully in (at least I believe they are--I'm 27 years old), and they do not create any serious problems for me. Could this pain be the result of wisdom teeth impaction, and if so, does it mean that my teeth will continue to shift unless I have the wisdom teeth extracted? I've also been experiencing fairly constant headaches (most likely tension headaches) for the past 3
weeks or so, and have already consulted my doctor about that. ...Visitor from CA (answer)

- Lower Gum Pain: I have had pain in my lower gums for a year now. I had an x-ray done on my jaws and it shows nothing wrong. I don't have any cavity problems and my wisdom teeth have been pulled. - Pain from a Filling: About 3 months ago I had a cavity filled. Upper left, 3rd from rear. It was sensitive to cold. All seemed well for a week after. Then severe pain, radiating up from the tooth into my upper jaw bone. I've been to the dentist every week since. It's been refilled, along with the tooth next to it and the bite has been adjusted almost every visit. My teeth are now sensitive in
that area. I cannot chew without pain on my left side. Currently I am on 8 days of Penicillian and told I may need a root canal. It's been painful so long,I can't distinguish where it's all coming from now. I'm wondering if it's best to go to another dentist...what could this all be. Any suggestions or advice is greatly appreciated! ...Visitor from CT (answer)
