  • Toothache and lower jaw pain: Three weeks ago my dentist preped my #2 tooth for a crown. The tooth was fractured, but had not been hurting me. It was discovered during a routine visit. Since that time I have had a toothache in tooth #2 and on the lower back teeth area on the same side of my mouth. The permanent crown was attached a week later, at which time the #2 had to be deadened, but I still had pain during the procedure. Last week, my dentist adjusted my bite, which he felt was the reason for the consistent pain. It hasn't helped as I am still having pain in both areas. He has prescribed Hydroco / Apap and I have also been taking Tylenol and Advil. It's worst at night. The crown is very sensitive to cold / hot. Am I too impatient? .... Visitor from OK     (answer)

  • Novacaine doesn't help: I have recently been having severe pain in my tooth that I had a filling done on 5 months ago. At first my tooth became sensitive to cold but now has a throbbing pain and is very sensitive to pressure. I went to the dentist and he said my gum is swollen but there is nothing that he can see with the x-rays. So he injected the area twice with novacaine. The throbbing pain was relieved but pressure upon the tooth still hurts. He and the nurse looked at me like I was crazy and kept trying to explain that I shouldn't feel a thing. Is there something wrong that I would need to worry about or am I stressing over nothing? .... Visitor from TX     (answer)

  • Anchored dentures stop gum pain? About 3 years ago I had an upper denture placed. It worked OK for awhile but started to hurt and the bite was off. I also have diabetes and very bad gum disease on my lower teeth. I have stopped going out with friends because of my "teeth". I will need to have the lower teeth pulled soon because the gums have receded. My question is, will dentures anchored in place still cause pain to the gum area. I would love to have all implants but it is not financially feasible. Any suggestions? .... Visitor from NY     (answer)

  • Intermittent Pain: My mom wears dentures and is fine during the day but sometimes at night her gums bother her. It is at different times and I can't find any rhyme or reason to it. Sometimes she goes for a week without pain and sometimes it's every night with pain. Help. Is she allergic to something she's eating or drinking that is causing this? They say (both doctor and dentist) that her gums look very healthy. .... Visitor from IL     (answer)

  • I had 3 crowns done on the lower left side almost 2 yrs ago. Since then I have had constant pain in the gums around those teeth. I have made several trips back to the dentist and have had the crowns adjusted several times and had x-rays done. Now the dentist is saying there is nothing wrong. The pain is a burning pain in the gums and in my tongue. Any ideas what could be causing this? It feels like if I could adjust the crowns that it would feel better if that makes sense or that they are not in my mouth correctly .... Visitor from TX     (answer)

  • When I was about 5 months pregnant with my daughter, I started having a pretty bad toothache in a lower right molar. I initially attributed this pain to a lack of calcium due to the pregnancy. 9 months later, the pain is so excruciating that I can't sleep at night. I spend most of the night screaming and crying, and normally, I have a very high pain tolerance. The problem is, the pain is now spread across my entire mouth. It seems like every tooth hurts (some more than others and it's constantly changing). My jaw has started locking up as well. The only thing that works is a heating pad and even that remedy is beginning to fail. I don't notice any strange bumps or severe swelling. Help! .... Visitor from NY     (answer)

  • I had a problem with my teeth several years ago...the gums did not cover the back of the tooth on top in the back on each side, and those two teeth began to rot. They were rebuilt using silver fillings. One is intact, half of one came out. The tooth does NOT hurt and does not bother me. However, my dentist insists that I need a root canal and refuses to fill OR pull the tooth. Now, my gums on the outside next to that tooth are beginning to hurt. Should I see a new dentist? Insist on having it filled? Insist on having it pulled? .... Visitor from MD     (answer)
