FAQ:  Speech Articulation Problems

Video: Teeth and Speech: Experiencing the Relationship

  • Why do I hiss in new dental reconstuction? I am going through dental reconstruction after a car accident (neck and jaw injury) and negligent dental care. I am not sure my jaw and teeth have been restored to the correct position. I felt much better in a higher splint than this lower overclosed position. I can't chew comfortably, have ringing ears, migraines, stiff at the base of the skull, dizziness and nausea. I also hiss and whistle when I speak. My crowns are in with temporary cement. Why do I hiss and whistle? The only thing my dentist can do is verify that I have these problems and that "something is not quite right". ....Visitor from CA     (answer)

  • New crowns cause slurred speech: When I had crowns put on my front lower four teeth a year ago, I developed a slur in my speech. What can I do about it? ...Visitor from NY     (answer)

  • Can you free a 28 year old girl of her lisp? My girlfriend had a gap between her 2 front teeth filled 3 days ago. She had the gap her whole life - it was about 2-3mm). Since then she has had a lisp and has been very distressed as she does a lot of communicating for work. She's worried that it may be permanent. Will she adapt or will she need your help to learn how to enunciate her 'th' and 's'? ...Visitor from Australia     (answer)

  • I just received my top implants with temp gluing. I am in the audio narrating business and having problems with speech lisping. My implants are very heavy in weight and I heard that they are all made of Titanium ... is this normal? ...Visitor from CA     (answer)

  • After getting my teeth filed and getting my Invisalign I now whistle when I pronounce the "S" sound. I am now finished and my dentist doesn't know what to do about the whistle. It is all I think about when I talk and it all began after I had my teeth filed. ...Visitor from CA     (answer)

  • My 3 front teeth were bonded together and now I spit when I talk. Is there anything I can do to get things back to normal where I don't spit anymore? ...Visitor from FL     (answer)
