FAQ:  What If I Don't..?

  • If I have a dry socket and wasn't able to go back to the dentist for awhile, what would happen? I got my tooth removed January 19 and still I am feeling some pain. ...Visitor from TX     (answer)

  • Not replacing an extracted tooth with a recommended implant: About a year ago I had a tooth removed (lower left second premolar, I believe... the 5th bottom tooth on the left side of the jaw), and was advised to return in 6 months to begin implant procedures to fill the gap. The cost of this is prohibitive, and also, since the gap is not visible or painful in any way, I haven't had much desire to follow up. My question is, if I choose not to replace the tooth are there any kind of ill-effects in store down the line, or is the gap something that can remain as is? ...Visitor from MA     (answer)

  • Not going through with a recommended root canal: 11 years ago I had a cap placed on tooth #3 after it broke around a large filling. 4 years ago I experienced about 5 hours of excruciating pain in the tooth. Over the next days, a draining fistula appeared directly above the tooth, with relief of pain. The fistula drained off and on for 2 1/2 years. I've had no pain or drainage now for 1 1/2 years. However my dentist is advising me to have a root canal now, saying there is periapical bone loss above the nerve. I do most of my chewing directly on this tooth with no problems. My question, since I've always liked the theory of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", what if I just observe this and don't do the root canal? ...Visitor from DE     (answer)

  • Root Canal without a Crown? I just had a root canal. The dentist told me I now need a crown. How long can I wait before getting one? Is it necessary? ...Visitor from OH     (answer)

  • Delays in Root Canal Treatment - Dangerous? How dangerous is it to go 2 months in a half completed root canal process? For various reasons, I have had the back lower molar worked on three times, each time incomplete because the novacaine couldn't take full numbing effect. Also, each time the dentist said the root had filled up again. He had to drill and scrape out three times now! And still it is not completed. I have been on antibiotics for several weeks. It will be three weeks before I can see him again. I am REALLY concerned now and want to see another endodontist because I no longer trust he can finish the job. ...Visitor from NY     (answer)
