I had my wisdom teeth (all 4) last month. One was difficult to remove and the surgeon had to dig into the bone to remove it. Two weeks later, I was admitted to the hospital for surgery due to a VERY painful abscess. Three days after that I was released and then put on Keflex. Still on the meds now. I have been unable to really open my mouth for about 3 weeks now...even though I have been doing the exercises. I can still only eat soft foods. I can barely get a utensil in my mouth! I have lost 12 lbs. Also, and I'll try to explain this the best I can...but when I do eat...the first bite or two, it's like my salivary glands go crazy and I have this intense paralyzing pain that radiates up to my ears. ...Visitor from NC (answer)

Three weeks ago I had my lower left wisdom tooth removed under local, it was surfaced and came right out in less than five minutes. I go back one week later complaining it still hurts. Oral surgeon said it looked great no dry socket. Woke up third week on Monday with tight jaw and teeth pain in all my uppers on that side. Went to ER, and back to oral surgeon, then to regular dentist. No one could find a cavity or any dental problems. This pain is the worst I have ever felt. Percocet and Vicodine will not take the pain away. Where should I go next, it hurts so bad like a huge cavity and a candy bar in it! plus the tight sore jaw. Please help. I just can NOT take it one more day, going nuts! ...Visitor from DE (answer)

I have gone to the dentist and he said there is a wisdom tooth pushing against my tooth which has a bad cavity which might need root canal. I have been on antibotic for a week and now I have a very bad swelling on one side of my face and inside my mouth. What can I do to get some kind of relief since no one is open to see me on the weekends. When I went to the hostial they would not give me anything to relieve the pain, which was a waste of $300 or more. My own dentist did not even call back to see if the other antibotic was even working. Now I can't eat or hardly talk, since I can't even open my mouth. What can I do to get RELIEF? ...Diane in MI

I had all four wisdom teeth removed when I was 17. I am now 20 and they are growing back in. My mother called the office where I had the original surgery and they refuse to see us because they say it is impossible for a second set to grow in. Is this just a case of misinformation? My top wisdom teeth are fine, and came through normally. But my bottom ones are now pushing to get through although I cant figure out where as there isn't any room left unless it actually changes the shape of my jaw. I can't open my mouth properly as it hurts, and my glands are up in my throat which is adding to the pain. Should I leave them for a bit in case they end up coming through fine? I really hate going to the dentist. ... Gus in OH (answer)

My brother had his wisdom teeth extracted 1 1/2 months ago. He is 37 and is in general good health. A serious infection followed on one side of his face. After tests, it was treated as an anaerobic infection and the Dr. prescribed Flagyl. When the infection was gone, he was still unable to open his mouth. An MRI indicated that both of his jaws were dislocated. The Dr. did a procedure that manipulated the bottom jaw back into place. Initially, it was thought to work, but his jaw is once again unable to open to any more than insert a straw and sip. He is able to insert only about 3 or 4 popsicle sticks. The Dr. now thinks that perhaps the meniscus is no longer there and needs to be replaced through needles into both sides of the face. He can just barely open his mouth enough to take miniscule bites of food. Any information or insight you may have would be appreciated. (answer)

I had all wisdom teeth pulled 4 days ago. The pain I was experiencing was not that bad so I did not use the Lorcet prescribed to me. The next night only my right side started to swell. It became so swollen that I was crying and the Lorcet was not working. I called in on an emergency to see the doctor on Saturday. He said that I may have some blood in the area and he has to drain it. The swelling got worse two days later. I went to see him again and this time he said it is infected. He had to put me to sleep because the pain was so unbearable that he could not do the work. He then gave me Cleocin, more Lorcet and told me to rinse with regular water and put heat on the area. It is now one day later and the swelling has moved to the lower cheek (jawline area), the bottom of my chin and throat. I am not sure what to do. He wants to see me again but I am scared that he is not doing the right thing for me. Everyone is telling me to use icepacks and salt water but him. Please Help! ...Visitor from NY (answer)
