FAQ:  Fillings

Question:
Can you tell me if a tooth needs a crown when the outer tooth is broken? Can it be banded, filled and shaped instead? Thanks ...Visitor from PA

Answer:
Usually, when the outer portion of a tooth is broken, a crown is required. A filling is only a temporary measure because it is not strong enough to withstand the chewing forces that are brought to bear on the tooth.
