Flipper Alternative
Question:
Flipper versus Implant Versus Bridgework: I had my front tooth pulled approximately 2 weeks ago and have a flipper tooth for now, which is very uncomfortable.
I could get a dental implant which will take approximately a year to reconstruct, or get a bridge and shave down teeth that are healthy. Are there any other options? ... Visitor from NY
Answer:
Although the implant is a longer process, it is in my opinion better than having your virgin adjacent teeth prepared for a bridge.
I would however, recommend another temporary prosthesis for your missing tooth. A clear retainer with a fake tooth works better in my practice than a flipper. The flipper sits on the gum and can cause some more bone loss.
The retainer does not rest on gum tissue and maintains your teeth better so that they don't shift. The pictures sent to you (click here to see) are an example of a young gentleman that lost both front teeth. We used the clear retainer with two fake teeth while the area was not only healing from the extraction but also when the implant was integrating in bone. In other words, if you had a flipper on the area of where the implant is healing no acrylic should be touching the site.
