Flipper Alternative
Question:
Required? My oral surgeon told me to get a dental flipper to wear while I am awaiting my dental implants.
This is something not covered by insurance and I am wondering if this purely cosmetic or required to prevent my teeth from shifting. The cost of the flipper is $500 for something I will wear for 5 months tops.
I have also heard that a flipper may irritate your mouth and be hard to get used to. What is the protocol while awaiting implants and it is necessary to get the flipper? I would rather not spend the money if it is not necessary. ... Visitor from PA
Answer:
Depending on which tooth is missing, patients will prioritize if they need a flipper or not.
If you are not that concerned with being toothless for a short time, then you can decide to go without the flipper.
Flippers can indeed irritate healing tissues, which can be critical for eventual implant placements. Many people will use their flipper while eating, which causes the irritation.
