FAQ:  Forensic Dentistry

Question:
Hi I would like to know ... I am in the first stages of exhuming my Dad's grave. I have a left upper lateral of the skull from a CATscan. Can this ID the remains? ... Visitor from AZ

Answer:
Bone often has it's unique trabeculae (the pattern of dark and light lines seen in an x-ray). This should be able to compare the bone with the CATscan. Also in the bone there are blood vessels which will have their own pattern which will help with ID.

If you have some old things like a hiar brush then you could do a DNA test which would be a more definitive test.
