Question:
Loose tooth due to fracture: I had a route canal done to one of my upper right molars a few years ago.
At the time I did not get a crown because of financial reasons. I recently went to my dentist as I was experiencing discomfort on that tooth.
He discovered that it was loose and said that it was fractured. He said my only options were to get a 3 unit bridge or a tooth implant.
I was wondering if these are really the only options that I have. I did some research on line and was reading that sometimes one can retain strength from the bone again. ...Visitor from FL
Answer:
Your problem is a fairly common one for most dentists.
A patient has a root canal but neglects to follow-up with the recommended treatment which is usually a core build-up and crown.
A tooth that has had a root canal can be structurally weak and thus is prone to fracture. If the fracture is bad, the best treatment would be to extract the tooth and then place an implant to replace the tooth.
The next best option would be a bridge. Once the tooth is fractured beyond salvageability, there is nothing that can be done except remove it. Improving the strength of the bone around the tooth would not help save the tooth.
