Question:
Gagging prevents getting impressions: I had all my teeth extracted.
Now I can't get my impressions done because of gagging reflexes. I've been sent to another dentist, but he was also unable to get the impressions. ... Visitor from NC
Answer:
It sounds like your severe gag reflex is a real problem during dental impressions.
In our practice we first use a Benzocaine numbing spray to numb the back of the throat which helps patients not to gag. The use of nitrous oxide relaxing air may also help quell the gag reflex.
It may sound strange but a patient can lift one leg in the air a bit while the impression is being taken to stop the gag reflex also. When one leg gets tired you switch to the other leg back and forth until the impression is set.
If this still doesn't allow you to get an impression done, you may need to see a dentist who can do dental sedation for you that would calm the gag reflex enough to get the care completed.
