Question:
Hurting Gums: My gums on my left side, top and bottom have been hurting so bad I haven't been sleeping.
They bleed a little but they are not swollen and they are pink. How can I stop the pain?
Do you think I have gum disease? ...Visitor from NM
Answer:
Your gums are sore and bleed some. Healthy gums don't bleed and aren't sore.
You didn't mention your age or how long it has been since you had your teeth cleaned. This could be a minor problem now, but without treatment could become very serious.
I would recommend that you see a dentist for a thorough evaluation and whatever cleaning regimen he or she advises. Do not ignore this warning of pain and bleeding. Periodontal disease (gum inflamation) is sometimes a more critical sign of risk for stroke and heart attack than high cholesterol and hypertension.
Your saying that this is occurring on the left side may be a completely different problem. You could be grinding your teeth (especially at night) and have a bite problem that could become worse without treatment.
Whatever is going on, please see a dentist for an evaluation. Hope this makes you sleep better.
