Question:
Cleaning Deep Pockets: I am going to have some of my teeth with #6 or 7 depth cleaned.
They are going numb the teeth, one quadrant at a time and inject an antibiotic (tetracyline) at the root of each tooth after they have been planed.
I had a corrected Coarctation (of the aorta) when I was ten years old so I am cautious. Could you please tell me more about this procedure and it's success rate? ...Visitor from CA
Answer:
Arrestin is an antibiotic, minocycline, which is a member of the tetracycyine class of antibiotics.
Minicycline exerts its antimicrobial activity by prohibiting ptotein synthesis of the bacteria and has been shown to be effective against the pathogens associated with periodontal disease.
Arrestin is a powder that is blown into the pockets with a special syringe (plastic tube, not a needle). It maintains its therapeutic drug concentration for up to 21 days of administration. I use this in my office, with excellent results.
There is clinical proof that Arrestin plus scaling and root planing will cause more healing in deep pockets than scaling and root planing alone. As for the Corarctation, your dentist and physician should consult with each other concerning your specific condition at the present time.
This is a totally noninvasive procedure, so my feeling is that it is not significant. However, your dentist and physician should decide this for you. You can learn more about Arrestin by visiting the manufacturer's website at www.orapharma.com.
