Question:
Periodontitis: I was told by my dentist that I have bone loss in 3 quadrants and I could loose my molars.
My pockets are measuring 5-6 mm in some spots. My question is how severe is this?
Am I a candidate for scaling because the periodontist immediately suggested gum flap surgery. This seems really aggressive to me seeing as this is the first I have heard of the bone loss ...Visitor from NY
Answer:
It is difficult to say without seeing your xrays, however 5-6mm pockets is a concern.
Usually the first line of defense is scaling and root planning with rinsing agents.
If this doesn't work then the next step is a systemic medication (like a pill Periostat) along with the scaling and root planning.
If all else fails then we go to surgical intervention. Ask your periodontist about these options to see if you are a candidate
